How Terra Lana Building Insulation is Made

The technology for Terra Lana natural wool insulation was originally developed by WRONZ - Wool Research Organisation of New Zealand (now AgResearch) in the 1990s. Terra Lana was the first company to commercialise the technology in New Zealand and continues to be the market leader for wool insulation in this country.

The wool in Terra Lana natural wool insulation is a carefully selected mixture of clean, recycled wool off-cuts from New Zealand textile and carpet manufacturers, and pure sheep wool. The wool is mixed with a small proportion of polyester melt bond fibre which melds to give the batting strength and stability.

It is important to note some companies claim their product is made from 100% natural fibre but what they don’t tell you is this fibre needs to be held together by some bonding agent. Usually this is by heat cured resin or solvent refined mineral oil which can constitute up to 20% of the total product. So don't be fooled.

We use polyester (the same stuff clothes are made from) to do the bonding because we're convinced it is a safer and more environmentally friendly ingredient than commercial glues.
