Depending on whether you are installing insulation before or after the house has finished being built, underfloor insulation can be installed either from above (before the flooring has been fitted) or from below. The method show below is for installing from beneath the floor.

Terra Lana is designed to friction fit most joist spacings. Push the Terra Lana lightly up to the bottom of the floorboards, while still retaining its loft. Staple through the bottom layer between 50mm and 80mm from the top of the joist. The idea is to allow the insulation enough space to loft to its designed thickness but still have the insulation in contact with the underside of the floor. At the end of the joists the stapling height should be closer 50mm below the top of the joist to ensure no air can circulate above the insulation, in the unlikely event a gap should open up.

1 Loosely fit the wrap, foil side outwards, around the cylinder. In tight areas the wrap will flatten to 15mm.
2 Where necessary cut a slit from the edge of the wrap to slide the wrap over piping then tape the slit.
3 Pull the edges of the wrap together so they just touch. Do not pull them together tightly as the wool in the wrap needs room to regain it’s natural loft after being compressed in the packaging.
4 If the wrap is larger than the cylinder you can either:
a. Trim the edges. DO NOT trim the edges with the fold backs (flaps).
b. Overlap the edges.
5 Tape the edges in place using the fold back.
6 Pull the wrap together at the top like a Christmas cracker and fix around the header pipe with a cable tie. You can push the wrap flat onto the top of the cylinder to make it easier to gather the foil and tie it.
7 Wrap the woollen pipe lagging supplied around the pipe carrying hot water from the cylinder. Do this in a coil like manner ensuring a 50% overlap. Secure both ends of the lagging with PVC tape or cable ties.

Wind the Terra Lana Woollen around the pipe in a coil like manner ensuring a 50% overlap.
Secure both ends of the lagging with PVC tape or cable ties.
No protective clothing, gloves or mask required.

Where the lagging is exposed to direct sunlight it must be protected by a UV resistant wrapping.
Where exposed to external moisture lagging should be protected by a waterproof membrane.
When installed as shown, Terra Lana Wool lagging will comply with the minimum requirements of N.Z.B.C Clause G12, Water Supplies.
It is extremely important to be wary of electrical wiring. Take note where it is and ensure if cutting or stapling that you do so well clear of wires. If using electrical equipment (such as a stapler), use an RCD safety device.
Avoid pushing wiring forward against interior wall linings, as this can potentially be a hazard where people may put nails, etc into the walls.
If you are retrofitting an old house, make sure there is no unsafe old, live wiring. You may need to get an electrician to check and clear any problems.
Keep insulation clear of hot devices or surfaces such as downlights and chimney flues. There are legal requirement specifications for this according to situation. Refer to the insulation compliance standards guide.
Most ceilings are not built to take any weight between rafters. If you accidentally step or kneel on the plasterboard you will fall through! A set of boards to lay across rafters and alternately shift along as you go may be a suitable solution.
It pays to check for whitetail spider infestation before crawling around in ceilings or underfloors. You may be able to tell by whether there are many other spiders about – if not, there could be whitetails (which eat the other spiders). If there is a concern you should wear protective skin covering clothing, or call in an exterminator.
Take care to check for hazardous objects–ᅠbrokenn glass; rusty nails sticking out; protruding pipes; things to bump your head on!... When working underfloors, it may be best to use mats to work on, or install ground cover sheeting first.
Please read or download NZS4246 which is the New Zealand standard for installing insulation..
There are requirements to stipulate safe and effective use and performance of insulation. These include specifications for the thickness R value you will need; clearance from downlights; climate zones; access to electrical and plumbing, etc. These standards are required to be met for building code compliance and they also ensure your home is insulated safely and most effectively.
Terra Lana is completely safe to handle, is non toxic and does not require breathing masks or protective clothing.
Terra Lana Ceiling insulations, Wall insulations and underfloor insulation can be easily ripped to length by hand. If you need to cut across the grain, this can be easily done with a pair of wool shears, strong scissors or knife.
