HOW TERRA LANA INSULATION IS MADE

 

The technology for Terra Lana natural wool insulation was originally developed by WRONZ - Wool Research Organisation of New Zealand (now AgResearch) in the 1990s. Terra Lana was the first company to commercialise the technology in New Zealand and continues to be the market leader for wool insulation in this country.

 

The wool in Terra Lana natural wool blend insulation is a carefully selected mixture of clean, recycled wool off-cuts from textile and carpet manufacturers, as well as virgin sheep wool. The wool is mixed with a polyester melt bond fibre which melds to help hold the fibres together.

 

We have special machinery that separates the fibres, which are then layered together in many thin sheets to build up the insulation. The fibre passess through an oven to bond the fibre into a stable thick blanket  We can cut the insulation into blankets or into slabs as required by the customer.

 

We use a non-toxic polyester (the same stuff clothes are made from) to bond the wool fibre together because we're convinced it is a safer and more environmentally friendly ingredient than commercial glues.

 

It is important to note some companies claim their product is made from 100% natural fibre but what they don't tell you is this fibre needs to be held together by some bonding agent. Usually this is by heat cured resin or solvent refined mineral oil which can constitute up to 20% of the total product, and may not be non-toxic. So don't be fooled.
