Terra Lana achieves Eco Choice certification

by | Apr 2, 2025

With our entire Terra Lana product range now Eco Choice Aotearoa-certified, we can offer specifiers independent assurance that what you’re choosing is genuinely sustainable.

Architects are under increasing pressure to specify products that deliver not just performance, but positive outcomes for the planet too. Eco Choice Aotearoa is New Zealand’s only Type I ecolabel – and one of the most comprehensive and challenging environmental certifications to achieve.

It looks at everything – raw materials, energy use, water use, emissions, packaging, transport, product performance and even end-of-life disposal.

The steps to Eco Choice certification

Achieving certification meant digging into every part of our operation and supply chain. To start, we provided full transparency on our wool sourcing – proving we use 100% New Zealand wool that’s ethically and sustainably produced. Then came a thorough analysis of our entire manufacturing process – from the energy powering our machines to the packaging our products are delivered in.

We tested and verified the performance and durability of every product in our range, documented our chemical inputs (we’re already Declare Red List Free), and demonstrated how our products support a circular economy – showing recyclability, take-back systems and waste reduction at every step.

In some areas, we were already well on track, thanks to years of focusing on local materials, natural fibres and non-toxic manufacturing. In others, we had to lift our game. It’s been a long but worthwhile process, with the added benefit of improving how we operate every day.

Why it matters for the industry

For architects working on Green Star, Homestar and Living Building Challenge projects, specifying products with third-party certifications makes the materials credit pathway simpler. Eco Choice certification is recognised by the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC), as is our Declare label, which means there is no extra legwork to justify your choice.

More broadly, if you’re aiming for buildings that perform well thermally, reduce environmental impact and support healthier living environments, certified wool insulation gives you confidence across the board.

We’ve always believed in doing things properly. Getting Eco Choice certified just makes that more visible – and easier for you to specify with trust.
