Navigating H1: Supporting specifications & calculations

by | Apr 2, 2025

With the 2024 H1 updates to the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC), architects are now working to meet stricter thermal performance requirements across both residential and commercial projects. For most builds, that means using the calculation or modelling method to demonstrate compliance – making insulation choices a little more complex than before.

Support to make the process easier

Brad Stuart, Terra Lana’s Specification Manager, works directly with architects to help simplify specification and compliance. He can assist with product selection, write insulation specifications directly into Masterspec, and make sure everything lines up with the NZBC. Brad can also prepare a full H1 compliance report ready to submit with your local council consent application – saving time and keeping things moving on site.

Terra Lana’s high-performance wool insulation is designed to meet (and often exceed) the new thermal performance requirements. With R-values that align with H1/AS1 and a commitment to environmental responsibility, Terra Lana supports your sustainability goals as well as your compliance obligations. You can also read our H1 guide for construction R-values within the various assembly types.

‘Terra Lana’s collaborative approach and flexibility have been invaluable in supporting our projects’ compliance with the H1 Building Code. Their expert advice ensured we met—and in many cases exceeded—the new energy efficiency requirements with ease. Their guidance in specifying the right products for each project was also fantastic, helping us make informed, sustainable choices across a range of project scales.’
—Eric Abba, architect at Pac Studio

Product datasheets for quick access to information

Terra Lana’s product datasheets are another valuable tool for architects and consultants working through H1 compliance. These detailed documents include R-values, product dimensions and thermal conductivity data for each insulation type, making it easier to calculate thermal performance during the design phase.

Whether you’re working with walls, ceilings or underfloor systems, the datasheets provide the technical detail you need to complete calculations and ensure specifications meet the updated Building Code. They’re available for download on our website and are a helpful reference when preparing H1 reports or coordinating with engineers and councils.
